Magnetic or clamp car mount — which holds better?

A clamp grips the phone mechanically, so it is the safer choice on rough roads and with heavy phones. A magnetic mount is faster — you place the phone one-handed — but holding force depends on the magnets: MagSafe-standard mounts hold well, while a thin metal plate under a case holds noticeably less.

Does a magnetic mount work through a case?

Through a thin case (up to roughly 2 mm) a MagSafe mount works, though the hold weakens. A thicker or rugged case pushes the magnets too far apart — in that case choose a case with magnets built in, or an adhesive metal plate.

Where in the car is the best place to mount a phone?

A vent mount is the most convenient and does not block your view, but in winter the warm air blowing through heats the phone. Mounted on the windscreen or dashboard the phone sits more steadily and closer to your line of sight — just make sure the mount does not obstruct the road.

Description

Speck ClickLock MagSafe is a black phone mount for a car air vent. It combines a magnetic MagSafe surface with the ClickLock Interlock connection and is intended for compatible iPhone models and cases.

With a Speck ClickLock case, the mechanical interlock engages with the case to help reduce slipping on uneven roads. A standard MagSafe phone or case can also be attached magnetically, but without the additional ClickLock engagement.
The lockable ball joint rotates through 360 degrees, allowing portrait or landscape positioning. The vent clamp is designed for one-handed phone attachment and removal.
The mount fits many conventional slatted vents, but not every round, deeply recessed or unusually shaped vent. Check the vent shape and blade stability before use, and position the phone so it does not obstruct vehicle controls or the driver's view.
A built-in cable guide helps route a separate charging cable. The mount itself does not supply power. Speck states that 50% of the plastic is recycled material.

The package contains one Speck ClickLock MagSafe car vent mount. A phone, case, cable and charging equipment are not included.
